Ayu's best 10 PVs- 2.《Free & Easy》

Free & Easy》, 2002

Youtube version(Official, 3 minutes):

Here comes to the second song with stunning PV, released on 24th April 2002(!!!),Free & Easy. I remember Ayumi Hamasaki was doing “Ayu’s Republic” at that time, and she looked really great with her center-parted straight blonde (to sliver) hair. The photos at the freezing forest that time were epic too.

The beginning of the video introduces you to a peaceful prelude, almost like a lullaby, with Ayu whispering “Sometimes I ask myself, how much farther will I have to go?...” this is a line I may think of before falling asleep, or when I am reflecting during the nights. The promotional video brings you back to middle age too, graphics in a slightly darker and grey tone, a group of ancient artists, conservative women, and children seem to be doing their job, fitting in their roles…but you can smell the tension in the air.

Finally, revealing Ayu(the main female character Jeanne d'Arc) is locked in a chamber.
(I have to mention the grapes too, I just have to!)

In 1:36 the pitch is going high (at the first time hearing it I was pretty scared, as I turned it quite loud). A very straight-forward plot, as she is about to be escorted and executed. The chorus may represent her struggles and fights through misunderstanding. But what really gives a twist is (Did I start spoiling something!!!???)the act piece that the craftsmen keep decorating from time to time in the video, was actually the cover of the girl’s coffin. That sparkles a sigh as it goes sad in the ending.

What I was young watching this video, I only saw the side that the main character would go brave and ready to sacrifice only for her beloved. But when I get older(? 10 years later and look at this again), I found myself viewing it with a different angle, a broader aspect, whether can we still name it “happiness”, when the sum of happiness is initiated based on a mankind’s sacrifice.

In Act Utilitarianism by Stuart Mill, it is allowed as governors only calculate and consider the sum of the total “Happiness”, if one’s loss makes whole an overall benefit, it can be performed (The introduction of the slave system), but down to Rule Utilitarianism, this action in the long run will lead to a negative mental disturbance to the whole group/ society (sympathy, e.g. people may scare that they are the next sacrifice), thus, it should not prevail. I buy the rule one. Thanks to my holistic care lessons in my college education, a grown can really think deeper in life. That is why I am pleased to get older, hehee~ :)
