《Moments》, 2004
I could
tell this song (and the PV♥) is the one that drag me to be a hardcore fan of Ms.
Ayumi Hamasaki. I was in secondary 4 at the time when the song was released, and I
kept sneaking to listen to the mp3 player(old stuff huh?) at the recess time.
Youtube version(Official, 2 minutes):
The
video also has shown up some fascinating graphics. Lyrics in this song are poetic in
terms of various metaphors. The only theme of this song is to give (or devote?) your best
golden time to your beloved, even you one afterward need to wither and fall alone as
a result.
As I grew up I don’t think this kind of sacrifice is healthy and positive,
as love should be given in “bilateral” ways, instead of only give give give
without asking for return (OMG am I too rational?). But the lyrics are so
great, I like the parallelism a lot, they are so much like “俳句 Haiku” in the main chorus, Ayu is
good at writing beautiful sentences.
(Ayu used flowers花, birds鳥, wind風and moon月as momentary
and vulnerable things she wanted to be in the song, so enchanting!)
See chorus: (with my quick translation)
If I could be a (transient)flower
I would have stood by you to blossom
And then when you see all my smile
I could go wither by myself
alone.
If I could leave my wings as a
bird
I would have flown to your location
And then to your back with hurts
I could give you my pair of
wings
[....]
If I could flow like wind
I would have reached your side
If I could be as bright as a moon
I would have kept shining on you」
…….See how those words look “ロマンチック”?
Let's rewind back to the PV itself.
Quite similar to "Surreal"'s PV, but push to a more subconscious level. At the beginning Ayu is sleeping alone in a villa-like place, she then wakes up by some noise and decide to have a browse around the corner(btw her nails in the pajama dress is artistically beautiful).
Ayu in the blue dress should be just a role for narration only, whispering for what she(the main character)was doomed to encounter. She hears some voices and chooses to open the door.
Here you go Ayu sees a bunch of kids are playing with wooden dolls. They seem happy, so does the pajama Ayu.
Later at the middle of the PV it turns out the fact that the children are destroying the dolls heartlessly. All the fancy things only stay at the surface when not digging deeper. And that all is devastating to the hostess.
At 3:40 in less than a second shown in the PV (!!)(can't cap screen if you are not paying high attention) the kids are actually another wooden dolls. They start to run around the house and bring damages(Bad kids.....= . =").
See another tyle of Ayu in this PV, she is like a bird without wings, soaking and dying in a blooding pool with scattering feathers. Maybe it is a presentation of her broken inside.
Near the end of the song, Ayu sings the last line:
"君がもうこれ以上二度とこわいものを見なくてすむのなら、
僕は何にでもなろう。"
(If I can make bringing you not seeing the things that are more horrible than this,
I can even be anything[for you] )"
and then open the next door, the next crucial fact is coming maybe, and the PV ends here.
I am surprised as there are rumors in fans forums interpreting the PV as "Bilocation"(such an innovative idea!):
The first Ayu wakes up was a sub-one, and the REAL Ayu actually wakes up at the middle of the PV(you can really see another girl is sleeping at 2:34, and a flash representing another oil lamp is lighted up again at around 4:06), so at the last two Ayus should be face to face at the end(sometime we fans are so creative!), I'm kind of liking this idea too, but I really cannot proceed such complicated plots, so be it!
Hope you enjoy.
